- Vittala Temple was commissioned during the 15th century AD under Vijayanagara King Devaraya II and significantly expanded under King Krishnadevaraya (1509–1529 AD). The stone complex stands within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi along the Tungabhadra River. Work on the complex continued until the fall of the empire in 1565.
Significance
- Vittala Temple is the ultimate architectural masterpiece of Vijayanagara stone craft, world-famous for its iconic Stone Chariot (Garuda Shrine) depicted on Indian currency notes. The Ranga Mandapa features 56 monolithic 'musical pillars' (Saregama pillars) that produce musical tones when lightly tapped. It stands as a UNESCO World Heritage symbol of ancient Indian art.
