- Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya established Badrinath in the 8th century CE after discovering a black stone idol of Lord Badrinath in the Narad Kund. The temple structure underwent numerous rebuilds due to avalanches, supported by Garhwal royal patrons. The colorful conical facade stands 50 feet high along the Alaknanda River.
Significance
- Badrinath is one of the four all-India Char Dham pilgrimage sites and a major shrine of the Chota Char Dham circuit. The sanctum enshrines Lord Vishnu in a meditative posture (Padmasana) beneath badri trees. Pilgrims take holy dips in the thermal sulfur spring Tapt Kund before entering the sanctum.
