  • The present Vishnupad Temple was commissioned in 1787 CE by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore along the banks of the Falgu River. Constructed from finely dressed grey granite blocks, it features an octagonal shrine topped with a 30-meter high spire. The site carries ancient Puranic sanctity linked to the legend of Gayasur.

Significance

  • The temple enshrines a 40-centimeter footprint of Lord Vishnu imprinted on solid basalt rock, enclosed by an octagonal silver basin. It is the premier sacred destination in India for Hindus to perform Pinda Daan rituals to grant salvation to departed ancestors. Millions gather here annually during the Pitru Paksha Mela.
