Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founder
Chola Kings
  • Valvil Ramar Temple was constructed by Chola rulers near Kumbakonam. Praise for the shrine is recorded in Thirumangai Alvar's 8th-century Pasurams. The granite structures were renovated by Thanjavur Nayak rulers in the 16th century.

Significance

  • The temple marks the site where Lord Rama performed the final funeral rites for the noble bird Jatayu after he was slain by Ravana. Exceptionally, Lord Rama is depicted in a reclining posture without his bow, symbolizing rest after completing Jatayu's rites. It is a key site for Rama devotion in Tamil Nadu.
