- Founded in the 13th century CE by Saint Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita school of Hindu philosophy. Legend relates that Madhvacharya retrieved an idol of Lord Krishna covered in gopichandanam clay from a merchant ship off the Malpe coast. The temple administration rotates biennially among eight mathas (Ashta Mathas) established by Madhvacharya.
Significance
- Udupi Krishna Matha is famous for offering darshan through Kanakana Kindi, a nine-holed silver window. Legend states that the idol turned around to grant darshan to the saintly devotee Kanakadasa through a window in the wall. The temple is celebrated for its daily Anna Dhanam and biennial Paryaya festival.
