- Initially constructed during the Pallava dynasty, the temple was later rebuilt in stone by Chola kings and expanded by Vijayanagara rulers. Inscriptions record grants from various Tamil dynasties and pilgrims across South India. The temple is historically famous as the meeting site where the first three Alvars composed the initial hymns of Nalayira Divya Prabandham.
Significance
- Revered as one of the 108 Divya Desams, the sanctum houses an imposing wooden idol of Lord Trivikrama with his foot raised high to measure the heavens. The Lord holds an inverted Panchajanya conch and Sudarshana chakra, symbolizing a rare iconographic variation. It is also recognized as one of the Pancha Krishnaraya Kshetrams.
