Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
Ancient
Founder
Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu
  • Mangalagiri is an ancient hill temple dating back to the Satavahana and Vijayanagara eras, with the 153-foot 11-tiered Gali Gopuram built by Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu in 1807. The temple sits on an inactive volcanic hill near Vijayawada. It is one of the eight sacred Mahakshetrams of Lord Narasimha in South India.

Significance

  • Mangalagiri Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple is famous for its unique miracle where jaggery water ('Panakam') offered into the deity's open mouth produces a distinct gurgling sound and half is automatically poured back out as prasadam. Remarkably, despite tons of sweet jaggery water used daily on the hill, not a single ant is found inside the sanctum.
