Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
14th Century AD
Founder
Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu
  • According to legend, the idol of Guruvayurappan was installed by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu on Lord Krishna's instructions, giving the site its name Guruvayur. Historical records document the temple back to at least the 14th century AD. Following a major fire in 1970, the inner sanctum was meticulously reconstructed in traditional Kerala architectural style.

Significance

  • Guruvayur Temple is celebrated as Bhuloka Vaikuntham, the sacred earthly abode of Lord Vishnu in South India. The presiding idol represents the four-armed standing Vishnu form as manifested to Devaki and Vasudeva at Lord Krishna's birth. The temple is famous for infant rice-feeding ceremonies (Choroonu), traditional weddings, elephant sanctuaries, and Krishnanattam dance drama.
