Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founder
Local Community and Ahom Patrons
  • Doul Govinda Temple was established after a consecrated Lord Krishna idol was recovered from Sandhyagiri Hill near Rajaduar. Supported by local devotees and royal Ahom patrons, the shrine complex was progressively expanded over the decades. An open Namghar was integrated into the premises for congregational chanting.

Significance

  • Dedicated to Lord Krishna, Doul Govinda Temple is famous across Assam for its grand annual celebration of Doul Utsav (Holi). Tens of thousands of devotees gather to throw colored powders, sing Borgeets, and seek blessings. The complex bridges traditional temple idol worship with Namghar congregational culture.
