- Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple (Thirukkozhi) was built during the Early Chola period in Uraiyur, the ancient Chola capital. Mentioned in the 7th-9th century Divya Prabandham by Tirupan Alvar and Kulasekara Alvar, it was expanded by later Cholas and Vijayanagara rulers. It is the birthplace of Tirupan Alvar.
Significance
- This temple is celebrated as the 2nd Divya Desam dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Azhagiya Manavalan alongside Kamalavalli Thayar. Legend says Goddess Lakshmi was born here as King Nanda Chola's daughter and wed Lord Ranganatha. It holds special importance in Vaishnava traditions and Alvar devotion.
