- The swayambhu idol of Varadvinayak was discovered in an adjacent lake in 1690 AD. Peshwa Subhedar Ramji Mahadev Biwalkar constructed the permanent stone temple in 1725 AD. A sacred oil lamp (Nanda Deep) inside the sanctum has reportedly burned continuously since 1892.
Significance
- Varadvinayak Mahad is the fourth shrine in the Ashtavinayak circuit, worshipping Ganesha as the fulfiller of desires and grantor of boons. It is distinctive because devotees can enter the inner sanctum to offer prayers directly. Four carved stone elephants guard the corners of the temple roof.
