- The Thousand Pillar Temple (Rudreshwara Swamy Temple) was commissioned in 1163 CE by Kakatiya King Rudra Deva in Hanamkonda. Constructed in the classic Trikutalaya architectural style, it contains three dedicated sanctums for Shiva, Vishnu, and Surya. The monument was restored under the stewardship of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Significance
- The temple is renowned for its thousand carved monolithic dolerite pillars positioned so that none obstruct the view of the sanctums. A massive monolithic Nandi bull carved out of polished black basalt rests in the central courtyard. It represents the height of medieval Kakatiya rock architecture.
