- The historical temple was destroyed during medieval invasions in the 13th and 16th centuries. The existing five-tiered red basalt temple was reconstructed in the 18th century CE by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Located adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Ellora Caves, it stands as a monument of Maratha architectural revival.
Significance
- Grishneshwar (Ghushmeshwar) is recognized in the Shiva Purana as the 12th and final Jyotirlinga. Legend tells of Ghushma, a devout devotee whose murdered son was revived by Lord Shiva at a nearby lake. The temple features red stone walls embellished with detailed relief carvings of Hindu deities.
