- The original idol was relocated from Keloshi to Kavlem in 1566 CE during Portuguese religious suppression. The current grand temple was constructed between 1730 and 1738 CE through the efforts of Naroram Rege, a minister to Maratha Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj who funded the construction.
Significance
- The temple honors Goddess Shantadurga, who intervened to end a conflict between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The idol depicts the goddess holding two serpents while standing between Shiva and Vishnu. Featuring a sloped tiled roof and stained-glass windows, it showcases Goan temple architecture.
