- The initial shrine was founded during the Western Ganga dynasty in the 9th century CE. It underwent additions under Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara rulers, followed by major expansions by the Mysuru Wodeyars in the 19th century. Hyder Ali donated an emerald necklace after his royal elephant was healed.
Significance
- Nanjangud is known as Dakshina Kashi (Varanasi of the South), situated along the Kapila River. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Srikanteshwara or Nanjundeshwara, the deity who swallowed the Halahala poison to save the universe. It features one of Karnataka's largest temple complexes.
