- The Marundeeswarar Temple was extensively expanded during the 11th century by Chola kings, with significant additions made by Rajendra Chola I. The shrine holds ancient roots commemorated in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by the Nayanar saints. Successive renovations were carried out under the Pandya and Vijayanagara dynasties.
Significance
- Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Marundeeswarar, the divine physician who cured Sage Agastya and imparted sacred knowledge of curative herbs.
