- Eklingji Temple was established in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty, at Kailashpuri. The temple complex was rebuilt and expanded after medieval invasions by Maharana Raimal in the late 15th century. The Maharanas of Mewar historically ruled as 'Dewans' (regents) under the supreme lordship of Eklingji.
Significance
- Eklingji is the ruling deity and guardian of the Mewar Kingdom, housing a magnificent four-faced black marble Shiva Linga (Chaturmukha Linga) rising 50 feet inside the double-storeyed sanctum. The complex encompasses 108 marble and sandstone shrines enclosed within fortified walls. To this day, the Maharana of Udaipur visits the shrine as a regent.
