- Originally built by Pallava kings in the 6th century CE, the temple was later enlarged by Chola and Vijayanagara rulers. Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya constructed the monumental 192-foot southern Rajagopuram in 1509 CE. The temple complex covers 25 acres in the historic city of Kanchipuram.
Significance
- Ekambareswarar Temple represents Prithvi (Earth) among the five Pancha Bhoota Stalam Shiva shrines. According to tradition, Goddess Parvati fashioned a Shiva Lingam out of sand beneath a sacred mango tree and worshipped Shiva. The courtyard contains an ancient mango tree believed to produce four distinct varieties of mangoes representing the four Vedas.
