History and Significance

History

Founded
14th Century CE
Founder
King Birakishore Deva
  • The Dhabaleswar Temple was established in the 14th century CE by King Birakishore Deva of the Suryavamsa Gajapati dynasty on an island in the Mahanadi River. The site has ancient roots as a place of Shaivite asceticism, and the present stone temple was erected to replace an older brick shrine. It is accessible by boat or via a notable pedestrian suspension bridge, which was constructed in modern times to facilitate safe pilgrim access.

Significance

  • Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Dhabaleswar (the White Lord), the temple's name is tied to a legend where Shiva transformed a stolen black crow into a white one to save a devotee from being falsely accused of theft. The temple is renowned for its scenic and tranquil setting on an island in the middle of Odisha's largest river, the Mahanadi. It serves as a major pilgrimage center during the holy month of Kartika, especially on the day of Bada Osha, when lakhs of devotees perform penance.

Pilgrim Guide

Before You Visit

Confirm timings on arrival

The listed hours are approximate (about 06:00–20:00). Check the day’s opening/closing time at the entrance or with local staff.

Plan for the river-island approach

As the shrine is on an island in the Mahanadi, allow extra time for reaching the temple and returning, especially during busy periods.

Carry essentials for sun and rain

River-side weather can change quickly; keep water, light rain protection, and sun cover for the approach and queues.

Dress and conduct

Wear modest clothing suitable for a Shiva temple and follow queue and sanctum instructions.

Visit during off-peak hours

For a calmer darshan, try early morning or later in the day within the open window, avoiding peak crowd times when possible.
