Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
c. 5th-6th Century CE
Founder
Sharabhapuriya Dynasty
  • The Deorani Jethani Temples are a pair of ruined, ancient red sandstone temples built in the 5th and 6th centuries CE under the Sharabhapuriya dynasty in Tala. They represent the earliest surviving temple structures in Chhattisgarh, showcasing early Gupta and post-Gupta architectural styles. The site fell into ruins over the centuries and was rediscovered and excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India in the 20th century.

Significance

  • Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temples are world-renowned for their unique, massive, and highly enigmatic stone sculpture known as 'Tala Rudra' or 'Rudra Shiva'. This sculpture depicts Shiva with his body parts made entirely of various animals, birds, and human faces, displaying an extraordinary level of iconographic complexity. The ruins of the twin temples (Deorani meaning younger sister-in-law and Jethani meaning elder sister-in-law) are a critical source for understanding the development of early Indian temple art and cosmology.
