- Banashankari Amma Temple was originally established in the 7th century AD by the Badami Chalukya dynasty in Tilakaaranya forest. The current stone structure was rebuilt in the 18th century in Dravidian-Maratha style by Maratha chieftain Parshuram Agale. An adjacent large stone water tank (Haridra Tirtha) is surrounded by pillared stone porticos.
Significance
- Banashankari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Banashankari ('Goddess of the Forest'), an incarnation of Parvati who defeated demon Durgamasura. The black stone idol depicts the eight-armed Goddess seated on a lion trampling a demon. The annual Banashankari Jatre fair held in January-February attracts huge agricultural and cultural crowds across Karnataka.
