History and Significance

History

Founded
Ancient / Medieval
Founder
Pala / Sena era local rulers
  • The Attahas Temple in Labhpur has ancient roots, with historical renovations occurring during the Pala and Sena dynasties in Bengal. The name 'Attahas' literally translates to 'loud laughter,' referencing the cosmic laughter of the Divine Mother. The present temple structure was rebuilt by local Zamindars in the late 19th century after the older stone shrine suffered natural wear.

Significance

  • Attahas is celebrated as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Hindu tradition, marking the spot where Sati's lower lip is believed to have fallen. The goddess is worshipped as Phullara (the blooming one), and Shiva is revered here as Vishvesha. The temple is situated in a tranquil pond-side grove that hosts thousands of migratory birds, creating a peaceful natural sanctuary where esoteric Tantric meditation and public devotion meet.
