महिम्नः पारं ते परमविदुषो यद्यसदृशी स्तुतिर्ब्रह्मादीनामपि तदवसन्नास्त्वयि गिरः । अथावाच्यः सर्वः स्वमतिपरिणामावधि गृणन् ममाप्येष स्तोत्रे हर निरपवादः परिकरः ॥ १ ॥
mahimnaḥ pāraṁ te parama-viduṣo yady asadṛśī stutir brahmādīnām api tad avasannās tvayī giraḥ | athāvācyaḥ sarvaḥ sva-mati-pariṇāmāvadhi gṛṇan mamāpy eṣa stotre hara nirapa-vādaḥ parikaraḥ || 1 ||
"O Hara, if even the praise offered by the greatest knowers — Brahma and others — falls short of your boundless glory, then surely all words fail before you. Yet every being has the right to praise according to the measure of their own understanding. On that ground alone rests my attempt at this stotra — and it is beyond reproach."
Pushpadanta begins with humility — acknowledging that even Brahma cannot reach the end of Shiva's glory, and yet every being, according to their own understanding, must attempt to praise him.
Shiva Mahimna Stotram is among the most celebrated hymns in the Shaiva tradition. Composed by the gandharva Pushpadanta after transgressing Shiva's sacred garden, it is a profound act of surrender and an exaltation of Shiva's boundless glory. Its 43 shlokas carry philosophy, poetry, and devotion in equal measure.
