History and Significance
History
- Founded
- Ancient
- Parassinikkadavu Sree Muthappan Temple sits on the banks of the Valapattanam River in Kannur district. Unlike orthodox Vedic temples, it originated from indigenous folk traditions centered around Sree Muthappan, a folk deity embodying Vishnu and Shiva. The shrine treats all human beings equally regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
Significance
- Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple is unique in Kerala for performing daily Theyyam ritual performances (Muthappan Theyyam) as the primary form of worship. In a distinct departure from traditional temple customs, offerings include cooked fish, toddy, and green grams. Dogs are considered sacred companions of Sree Muthappan and roam freely throughout the temple compound.
