- Parasnath Hills, also known as Shikharji, has been an active center of Jain pilgrimage since ancient times, with structural shrines constructed over several centuries by various kings, merchant guilds, and religious trusts. The various temples atop the hill range from ancient rock-cut platforms to modern marble shrines. It is named after Lord Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara, who attained liberation (moksha) at this holy site.
Significance
- Shikharji is revered as the ultimate Siddha Kshetra (place of liberation) in Jainism, where twenty of the twenty-four Tirthankaras attained final salvation. The mountain features thirty-one separate shrines (tonks) dedicated to these enlightened masters, dotting the rugged peaks of the hill. A pilgrimage here is believed to purify the soul, drawing thousands of Digambara and Shvetambara Jains annually who undertake the sacred 27-kilometer foot journey around the peaks.
