History and Significance

History

Founded
17th - 19th Century AD
Founder
Raja Basanta Roy
Construction
1720 - 1840 AD
  • The Maluti temple village was established between the 17th and 19th centuries by the tax-free Nankar royal family initiated by Raja Basanta Roy. Instead of building palaces, rival royal family sub-clans competed by constructing 108 terracotta temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kali, Vishnu, and Durga. Currently, 72 terracotta shrines survive in the village.

Significance

  • Maluti is a world heritage cultural site containing 72 surviving terracotta temples featuring detailed relief panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. The main temple is dedicated to Goddess Maulaksha, the ancestral deity of Maluti. Global Monuments Fund listed Maluti among the 100 most endangered heritage sites in the world.
