- The Chausath Yogini Temple at Hirapur was built in the 9th century AD by Queen Hiradevi of the Bhauma-Kara dynasty. Constructed from sandstone and black chlorite, it is an open-air hypaethral temple designed specifically for Tantric esoteric worship rituals. It is maintained as a protected national monument by the ASI.
Significance
- Hirapur Chausath Yogini Temple is one of only four surviving circular open-air Yogini temples in India. The circular wall contains 64 niches housing carved black chlorite images of Yoginis, each wearing intricate hairstyles and ornaments, riding distinct mounts (vahanas). The central shrine houses images of Goddess Kali and Mahakala.
